Athens in 2 Days: An Itinerary That Stays in the City
By Vasilis Tsiklos · Updated
Short answer
With 2 days in Athens, stay in the city. Day 1 is the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka. Day 2 is the Ancient Agora, Monastiraki and the National Archaeological Museum. If you still have energy on the second evening, Cape Sounion at sunset is the one trip worth adding.
Two days in Athens: why we say stay in the city
Two days is just enough for the best of Athens. A full-day trip to Delphi or Meteora would take half your time and leave you rushing the Acropolis. Our honest advice: don't book one.
The one exception is Cape Sounion. It only takes the late afternoon and evening, so you can add it to Day 2 without losing the city.
Day 1: the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka
Morning: the Acropolis
Go at opening time with a timed ticket, before the heat and the crowds. Plan about 2 hours.
Midday: the Acropolis Museum
A few minutes' walk from the south slope. It is cool inside and puts the sculptures you just saw outside into context.
Afternoon and evening: Plaka and Anafiotika
Wander Plaka, climb into the small whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika, and stay for dinner under the Acropolis.
Day 2: the Ancient Agora, Monastiraki and the National Archaeological Museum
Morning: the Ancient Agora and Monastiraki
Start at the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus, then walk into Monastiraki for the market and lunch.
Afternoon: the National Archaeological Museum
Give it 2 to 3 hours. If you plan to go to Sounion in the evening, keep this visit shorter or swap it for a rest at your hotel.
Evening: Lycabettus Hill, or Cape Sounion at sunset
If you stay in the city, watch the sunset from Lycabettus Hill. If you want to see the sea, take the optional Cape Sounion evening below.
Optional: Cape Sounion at sunset on the second evening
The drive to Cape Sounion is about 1 hour 15 minutes each way along the coast. The Temple of Poseidon sits on a cliff above the sea, and sunset there is the classic view. You leave in the afternoon and are back in Athens for a late dinner.
It is worth it if you want one look at the Greek coast. Skip it if you're tired. Lycabettus gives you a fine sunset without the drive.

Acropolis tickets and entry time
The Acropolis uses timed entry tickets. Book yours online before you arrive. The best time to go is right at opening, before the heat and the cruise-ship groups.
Opening hours
The Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum all change their hours by season, and all close on certain public holidays. Check the hours the week you travel. The Acropolis opens at 08:00 every day, and closing time moves earlier as autumn turns to winter:

Summer heat
From June to September, the middle of the day is hot and the ancient sites have little shade. Do the outdoor sites early, spend the afternoon in a museum or at your hotel, and go back out in the evening. Carry water and a hat.
Comfortable shoes
The marble paths on the Acropolis are polished smooth and slippery, and Plaka and Anafiotika are full of steps. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals with flat soles.

We don't recommend a full-day trip. It takes half your time. Cape Sounion at sunset is the exception, because it only uses the second evening.

About 1 hour 15 minutes each way. A sunset trip takes 5 to 6 hours in total.
